21 and Over Movie Review

I don't normally write movie reviews, but after watching this movie I felt I needed to express my feelings about it. When I saw the trailers for 21 and Over, I was really excited to see an Asian guy in a lead role. Yay! While hubs and I were in Arizona we scored some free tickets to see a pre-screening of the movie.

When straight-A student Jeff Chang's two best friends take him out for his 21st birthday on the night before an important medical school interview, what was supposed to be a quick beer becomes a night of humiliation, overindulgence, and utter debauchery.

FYI, the Asian guy is Justin Chon who was in Twilight. Well, it turns out that the Asian guy is passed out for half of the movie. Ugh. Plus, they gave his character a plot that is ,in my opinion, controversial and they don't properly resolve it.

In a quick summary of what I found wrong with this movie:

+ Asian is passed out for most of the movie - showing Asians as light weights, ok kinda true
+ Jokes are made about how Asian guy is small/short - Chon is 5'6 and that's pretty tall for an Asian
+ Asian is failing school and attempted suicide, movie does not resolve this very well in the end

Sorry, if you thought that was sort of a spoiler but I had to mention it. I used to work as a peer advisor in college. I have actually worked with Asian students who were in this situation and it is no laughing matter or something to lightly mention in a movie!! This is supposed to be a comedy movie, but when they brought this issue into the plot it just ruined the mood for me.

However, this is still a funny movie. Hubs found it hilarious and told me to stop being butt hurt about it. Ok, well you guys can watch it if you'd like and you can be the judge. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in there.
